LANGUAGES OF MYSTARA – Second Part

After a long wait, welcome to the second part of our general post about Mystaran Languages!

This part is quite unlike the first, here we will only try to give some language-related tools for DMs.

How to generate random linguistic stuff:

You can find yourself wanting to generate in a pinch really random NPC languages, foreign books in a library, the language on an old map in a dungeon and so on.

Linguaggi2_01The following table can be used to generate random languages for an NPC, a quest, a plot item: not all of the existing languages in Mystara though, I took some of them out since there are more than one hundred! Check our previous post and the Notes, where available.

WRITTEN BY/MAIN CHARACTER/RELATED TO (1d1000):

Well quite useful to determine the profession of a random NPC too!

Note: I made this table as a joke, I wanted to see if I could write down 1000 works (included fantasy classes), professions or life (or death, like the martyr) positions for a medieval world like Mystara. It turns out that I can, through careful cannibalizing of several sources, with a good dictionary and a lot of time! 🙂 It also turns out that I know an amazing amount of random, idiotic and quite useless English words (even medieval ones …) from my youth readings … I should definitely empty the thrash bin in my head! If only I knew how …

Ok, this is the end!

It is possible we create Excel sheets based on this post or even small Java-based apps, but it is not on schedule for now and it depends if there is a lot of interest on your part.

In the meantime I hope some DMs can find this post useful!

Bye

NOTES:

There are some small differences in writing, in the official sources: Ethengar/Ethengarian, Yazakan/Yazaka, Orc/Orcish or, more important, Yavi/Yavdlom.

[1] Consult GAZ14, for the Children of the Horse and their Sign Language.

[2] The tongue is, in truth, the Oltec, but the Azcans spread a lot so it is then know as Azcan.

[3] There is no written form; it is called Gruuk by Beastmen.

[4] Somewhere there is the indication of a “Pegataur” tongue but, according to PC2 – Top Ballista, I refuse this concept, using Centaur instead as their mother tongue.

[5] GAZ3 of Glantri implies there are different tongues for different colors of Dragons, while other sources say nothing. I think the best idea, or at least the one I prefer, is of a single, ancient, Common Draconic tongue, passed down unchanged for thousands of years (Dragons are even more traditionalists than dwarves!) and many different dialects for the colored dragons, while gemmed dragons, drakes and dragon-like beings speak the same, that is Red and Ruby Dragons and Fire Drakes, speak the Red Dragon Tongue or, more simply, the Red Tongue. Off course Dragons appreciate (in some cases are wary of) the effort to speak in their own language and may react favorably, like the Dracologists of Glantri well known! The Dragon Rulers speak all the dialects of the colored dragons of the same Alignment e.g. Diamond do not naturally (he needs to expend Power Points) speaks Red (Dragon) Tongue, because Red Dragons are Chaotic (even though Ruby Dragons are Lawful). They can anyway use the Common Draconic.

[6] The Language of the Elementals is complex, beautiful and very ancient: there are, off course, four different languages, impossible to speak (but not to understand) for Prime Plane creatures unless in Elemental Form, and many dialects. Other creatures of the Elemental Planes (Aerial Servants, Efreeti, …) speak the corresponding Elemental tongue but they also, very often, have their own language: creatures of the Prime Material can often be able to speak them, for instance a wizard could learn the tongue of the Djinni. Sages of the Elementals, also learn language of “enemies” though they cannot speak it: no Fire Elemental, for instance, can speak a word in Water Tongue. The Elementalists of Glantri learn these languages and receive, often, favorable reactions by the Elementals (the Rulers are, less likely to be favorable …).

[7] Giant or Giantish is not a single language with many dialects, like the Draconic tongue: Dragons are very similar in Intelligence, if not in preferred environment and behavior, so it makes sense that they have the same ancient mother tongue. Giants are very different, some of them are geniuses, other no more intelligent than a brute: their languages are quite different bur related (DM choice for how much). Example: a character knows the language of the Storm Giants so he can understand around 70% of what a Cloud Giant says (they are quite similar) but only 30% in Hill Giantish. Some wise Giants understand many of these tongues, usually the Cloud, Sea and Storm Giants, since they are, respectively, the merchants, the alchemist/healers and the sage/librarians (AC10 –   Bestiary Of Dragons and Giants), and they have many possibilities to meet other Giants.

[8] RC and GAZ8 conflicts about the Halfling language: I do not like it at all that the Hins have no proper language so I will take the RC idea but from GAZ8 I take the idea of the Lalor language, an almost forgotten ancient Hin tongue (see GAZ8 for details).

[9] Hutaaka and Nithian are essentially the same language (they have exactly the same written form) but a very different speech! You need to be able to bark and so on, to speak Hutaaka.

[10] An interesting consideration about a language “to be” is the tongue of the Grand Duchy of Karameikos. What is it? A true language or a dialect? Neither I’ll say! It will be a language in a few tents of years. For now the “Common” in Karameikos change a lot, from the Court of the Duke (almost pure Thyatian) to the rural areas, like the surroundings of Luln (almost pure Traladaran). The resistance to integration permits the existence of both Thyatian and Traladaran speaking areas, and the arising of a mixed tongue in between. For now then Karameikan is a, not so well defined, dialect of both Thyatian and Traladaran. It would probably be the average class, in touch with both the noble Thyatians and the humble Traladaran peasants, the responsible of the mixing of both languages and, ultimately, the entire society.

[11] Kna is the undersea common tongue: for a change it is not a human tongue but it is the tongue of the Kna race and a language of trade, like it is more usual.

[12] Kogolor is a completely different tongue than the Known World dwarven language: a Rockhome dwarf wouldn’t have an easier life in speaking with a Kogolor, than a common man. The Modrisverg dialect, almost unchanged for thousands of years, could be a bit more similar.

[13] Neathar are in relation with the Known World Neanderthal and the more primitive neighbors, the Brute Men of the Hollow World. In fact all races and cultures of the Hollow World speak at least a bit of Neathar: it is a true Common Tongue there.

[14] Skycommon is the Common Tongue in Serraine: it is only spoken there and is a mixture of several languages. If you know the Gnomish tongue you can understand around the 50% of what is said. The rest is, in order of importance, Phanaton, Centaur, Fairy, Elven and other languages too: not Dwarven, interestingly, since Dwarves do not like to live in the skies and, understandably enough, not many Gnomes there are able to read/speak Dwarven. If the PCs know Gnomish and a couple of the other four tongues, they understand quite a big deal.

[15] Slag / Slagich is a Common Tongue in a good part of the, multi-ethnic, Savage Coast.

[16] Sphinxes seem not to have a mother tongue in PC2 (though a Nagpa there knows an Ancient Sphinx tongue): I do not accept this idea since they were isolated for centuries and very intelligent.

[17] Tharian: the Common Tongue of the Orcs of Thar (GAZ10). There are many dialects and no one of them is a written language (humanoids are, usually, illiterate): some shamans, wicca, can use the alphabet of other races/cultures to write their tongues, on rare occasions.

[18] These are the three most Common goblinoid tongues in the Savage Coast.

[19] There is not a real Common tongue in Glantri, every Princedom has its own: in Glantri City and many other places, people speak a dialect of Thyatian with a distinctive accent, we could call it Glantrian. In other places it’s a dialect of Traladaran, Ethengar of Alphatian (Flaemish). Elves speak in the Belcadiz or Erewan dialects. Other languages are Averoignian, Klantyre and Sylaire. Some of these languages are from other worlds like the people speaking them.
